 In the courtyard of Collège Françoise Dupont, Marinette and Alya look at La Mode magazine, which Adrien is modeling for. Nino peeks at the girls from afar. Adrien notices that he is looking at Marinette. Nino admits to him that he has a big crush on Marinette, but is too shy to go talk to her. Adrien encourages him to invite Marinette to the zoo to see the new panther exhibit. Nino starts to walk towards her, but panics at the last minute and runs back to his best friend. Adrien smiles and assures his friend that he would be happy to help.

Later, Alya and Marinette are on their way home after school, still admiring the pictures of Adrien in the magazine. Distracted, Marinette accidentally bumps into Nino and drops the magazine from her hands. Stiff as a board, Nino doesn't move at all, prompting Adrien to come out from behind and apologize on Nina's behalf. Marinette giggles at the sight of Adrien, but then realizes that her magazine - fronted with several photos of Adrien - is in plain sight. Adrien tries to be a gentleman and goes to pick it up as well and they bump heads, prompting another apology from Adrien. Hoping to get Nino to open up, Adrien suggests they do something to make it up to them, but Nino remains frozen. Adrien finally invites the girl to the zoo at four in the afternoon. In a trance, Marinette agrees, then shakes in her boots when Alya tells her that Adrien just asked her out. Marinette believes she's going on her first date with Adrien and asks Alya for help. Across town, Nino reacts the same way when Adrien tells Nino that he and Marinette will be alone at the zoo.

Marinette arrives at the zoo and sits down on a park bench. Using an earpiece and microphone, Alya intends to coach Marinette on what to say while Alya herself stays out of sight behind a tree. Marinette notices Max and Kim, who explain that they came to see the new panther. Nino arrives shortly after, causing Marinette to question why Adrien is nowhere to be found. Adrien, unbeknownst to her, is hiding in the bushes to train Nino. However, Nina's nerves continue to get on his nerves and he ends up agreeing to her suggestion to wait for Adrien to arrive, much to Adrien's chagrin.

Elsewhere at the zoo, Kim and Max watch a new panther eat meat. Max tells Kim how fast the panther can go. He nonchalantly replies that he could easily beat her. Otis Césaire, the zookeeper, is upset by the remark and tells Kim not to bother the animal. Kim continues to taunt both the zookeeper and the panther by bragging about winning the district athletics tournament. Max then points out that a panther would be far more likely to eat Kim than race him, but Kim ignores the comment. Once again, Otis tells Kim to stop harassing the animal, but remains persistent in mocking the "poor cat" and her "crazy babysitter" as he and Max leave.

Meanwhile, Nino and Marinette continue to awkwardly wait for Adrien. Marinette asks if he's really coming. Coached by Adrien, Nino replies, "Yes, he will, but I wanted to spend some time with you first." Quickly after answering, he snaps and then reveals that he has a crush on a girl but is afraid to tell her. Marinette assures him that there is nothing to worry about. Nino starts to confess to Marinette, but at the last minute changes the girl to "your best friend Alya", prompting three loud "What!?"s from Adrien, Marinette, and Alya herself. However, Marinette likes the idea and offers to help bring them together. In contrast, Alya, who sees Nina as a friend, feels anything but happy about this development.

Sensing Otis' annoyance with the overly competitive Kim from his lair, Hawk Moth sends an akuma into the zookeeper's bracelet. He offers the man a chance to put Kim in his place. Once the zookeeper agrees, he transforms into Animan, a shape-shifting villain who goes after the boy. Animan unleashes the entire menagerie and, in panther form, stops Kim and Max. He mockingly tells them that he will give them a head start in their race.

At the benches, Alya again nags Marinette to arrange a date for her and Nina. Marinette tells her that he would be devastated if she refused. Before they can continue on, they spot Kim and Max running for their lives from the animals at the zoo, led by Animan. Marinette and Nino rush off, and once out of sight, Tikki berates Marinette for disrespecting Aly's wishes before turning her into a Ladybug. Elsewhere at the zoo, Plagg transforms Adrien into Cat Noir. The heroes find Kim, cornered by the Animan. He distracts the panther long enough for Kim to escape and Ladybug incapacitates him by tying him to her yo-ya, but before they can take his bracelet, the animals he freed come to his aid and force them to retreat. The heroes split up, realizing that getting them all back into their cages would be too much trouble. Ladybug spots Nino and Alya running for their lives, so she locks them in an empty gorilla enclosure for their own safety while the animals are free on the streets of Paris.

The heroes return to where they left the panther, but find no sign of him. This confuses Ladybug because she knows that her wire cannot be broken. They decide the best course of action for now is to find Kim. Finally they saw him, again cornered by the panther on top of the bridge. Cat Noir tells Kim to run, but not before placing a tracking device on him. Ladybug again ties Animan to the yo-ya, but he simply transforms into a bald eagle and flies off to Kim. Using his tracking device, Cat Noir finds Kim desperately pleading for help from the owner of Tom & Sabine Boulangerie. Realizing that their enemy probably has a good sense of smell, Ladybug asks Kim for a sweat. She places him on the railing and sprays herself and Cat Noir with deodorant to hide their own scents. Sure enough, Animan - now in ladybug form - flies to where the heroes placed the sweat pot. Ladybug traps him in a tissue box, but he transforms back into a panther and chases the heroes into an empty bus with the doors locked.

The duo try to fight him as they transform into different animals, each time gradually slowing down. Ladybug discovers that the transformations must tire him. Cat Noir activates his Cataclysm to crash the bus. The door is wide enough to give the heroes a chance to escape, but not a tired grizzly. At first he appears to be successfully worn down, but just as they are about to take the bracelet from the sleeping panther, he transforms into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Ladybug summons her lucky charm and, as usual, is confused by an object - this time a car jack. She puts it aside, realizing that her partner could use his feline agility
